How to Identify Someone with Low Self-Esteem

Low self-esteem can be a complex issue, and there are numerous potential causes. Sometimes confidence issues can stem from experiences in childhood, such as being ridiculed or belittled by teachers or peers. Other times, it can be caused by trauma - e.g., the aftermath of physical abuse or sexual assault. 

In some cases, low self-esteem may even be caused by the attitudes of parents or other important figures in one's life - messages of shame and guilt may be unconsciously internalized as self-limiting beliefs. At a deeper level still, low confidence may even have its roots in biological vulnerabilities - hormonal imbalances, genetic predispositions, etc. Consequently, while it's impossible to pinpoint the exact cause of low self-esteem without deeper consideration and careful assessment, these are among the more likely sources that could lead to an individual feeling unworthy and inadequate. Ultimately, understanding how and why confidence issues arise is essential for properly addressing them. 

If you have a hard time recognizing someone with low self-esteem, look for the following signs: They may be shy or withdrawn, avoid social situations, and lack confidence in their own abilities. They may display negative behaviors and think poorly of themselves. They often feel like they are not good enough or don’t deserve anything good that comes their way.  


It can be difficult to know how to help someone who has low self-esteem, but being there to offer support is always a start. Let them know that you care about them and believe in them no matter what. Encourage them to try new activities as this helps build confidence in their abilities. Additionally, focus on building up their strengths rather than pointing out weaknesses.  


Sharing compliments with someone who has low self-esteem is one of the best ways to help raise their spirits. Point out things that you admire about them and let them know that you appreciate their hard work. It can be difficult for them to accept compliments, so be patient and continue to remind them of how great they are.  


Finally, encourage positive thinking and help remove negative thoughts from their minds. Remind them of all the good qualities they have, instead of focusing on areas where they may feel like they lack ability or confidence. When people begin to think more positively about themselves, this can start to restore their self-esteem. With your support, it’s possible for those with low self-esteem to gain confidence and start to believe in themselves once again.  


By doing these simple things, you can help someone with low self-esteem get back on the right path towards feeling better about themselves. It may take time, but your support and encouragement can make a huge difference in their life. You are an important part of the process!  


When you’re building someone up, it's also important to be authentic and genuine with your compliments. Saying something nice just for the sake of it won't do much to raise their self-esteem. Instead, try to focus on specific qualities that you admire or moments where they have shown courage or resilience. These heartfelt sentiments will go a long way in helping them feel better about themselves.  


Remember, everyone deserves to feel good about who they are and what they can do. Your support and encouragement can help someone with low self-esteem start to gain the confidence they need to live a full, meaningful life!

Show a Distant Relative or Friend You Still Love and Care for Them

With the holiday season fast approaching, many families and friends will be gathering for meals while others may be invited to come, but may not show up because they are busy, aren’t close to the family any longer, or going through their share of challenges. Here are some tips to get a dialogue going, if necessary, about what might be their issue for not calling, writing, or coming around the family.
 
Communicate your concerns. Chances are that their reasonings might be genuine or they may be covering feelings. Think about what their last encounter with the family might have been like. Ask questions to hear their side of the story. However, if there weren’t any issues, it could be that the family member or friend really is busy or desires to sit this one out because they aren’t in the best of spirits. Don’t add any more stress by being emotional, rude, or arrogant. Be understanding and consider doing the following. 
Show love and provide a sense of peace and comfort in your act of giving to him or her. 

1. Cook their favorite meal and offer to bring it to them if they live close. If not, send snacks and desserts. We have a great partner who designs beautiful gift baskets that they can customize for you or buy already prepared, learn more here. 

2. Write a heartfelt letter. 
This is a lost art form, but beautiful letters go a long way. 

3. Buy them a small gift. 
If you have little money, a simple gift card in the mail is a nice gesture.

There are youtubers who have videos on how to do this list. You will want to either place music on a cd (if they still listen to those) or send it through a music service or have them download via a shared drive. 

5. Offer to do something for them that you know they don't like doing. 
Whether it is babysit children, cleaning and organizing, or running errands, sending them a text, card or email letting them know when you are available to help them. 

6. Give them a hug and tell them how much you love them the next time you see them. It means a whole lot if they haven’t been held in a long time. 

7. Draw or write a picture expressing your love for them. People enjoy getting a great piece of artwork especially from someone who they admire their talents. 

8. Take them on a special date. An outing is good for the soul especially to a favorite place, so share your availability with them to see when you both could hang out. 

9. Donate in their name to their favorite charity. This comes in handy later when they must file taxes, saving them money. 

10. Send a gift to someone on their behalf like a child that they are unfortunately are unable to give to him or her currently.

25 Things You Can Do to Stop Being Manipulated By a Friend, Spouse, Relative, Co-worker, or Manager

Feeling like someone is taking you for granted?  Tired of feeling like the manipulator is always winning and you are always losing.  Let's take a look at two examples and then we are going to get into how you can watch for signs that once again they are attempting to take advantage of you and what you can do to put a stop to it.

Sarah was happy to have landed her new job. The company was doing well and she was making more money than she ever had in her life. Unfortunately, her happiness was short-lived. Sarah soon realized that she was being manipulated by her controlling father financially. He would lie to her about his gambling addiction and cover up his drinking at the local bar late at night. Sarah was furious when she found out that for a long time he had been lying to her. She decided to take matters into her own hands. She confronted her father and told him that she was done being his puppet. She refused to let him control her anymore. Sarah then made a plan to get out of debt and stand on her own two feet. She was determined to live her life on her own terms, no matter what her father said or did.

Bill was scrolling through his wife's text messages when he came across a series of messages that made his heart sink. In them, Jenny told her friend how much she hated living with Bill and how she wished she could just leave him. She also complained about how controlling he was and how she was tired of pretending to love him.

Bill was devastated by what he read. He couldn't believe that his wife had been lying to him all this time. He felt like he had been duped and manipulated into believing that they had a happy marriage.

Bill confronted Jenny about the messages and she tried to deny it, but he knew that she was lying. He told her that he wanted a divorce and she finally agreed to it. Bill was glad to have finally seen through Jenny's lies and manipulation. He knew that he would be better off without her in his life.

In both situations, there was definitely manipulation going on; however when both victims realized what was going on they took action. It is never too late to create distance between you and the manipulator in your life. You will find that in the following tips, you most likely did the total opposite of many of them and that is why you attracted and kept the manipulator in your life for as long as you did.  

It can be difficult to see the truth that someone is using you, so we avoid it. We pretend as if nothing is going on. We make excuses when loved ones point out the deception.  We spin a web in relationships that further bind us to the manipulator rather than plan a safe exit sooner rather than later.  Yet, now with some light shed on your toxic relationship, you can begin steps to get free from the help of your Creator!  You will find that many of the modern day advice is also found in the Bible. 

1. Know your personal boundaries and do not let anyone cross them. 
2. Don't be afraid to say "no." 
3. Be assertive and speak up for yourself. 
4. Stay true to yourself and don't let anyone change who you are. 
5. Don't give in to pressure from others, especially if it's not something you're comfortable with doing. 
6. Maintain your independence and don't rely on others for your happiness or well-being. 
7. Be aware of the signs that someone is trying to manipulate you and don't be afraid to stand up to them. 
8. Don't be afraid to walk away from a situation or relationship that's toxic or harmful. 
9. Trust your instincts and don't be swayed by what others tell you. 
10. Be honest with yourself and others, even if it's difficult to do so. 
11. Keep your emotions in check and don't let anyone take advantage of your vulnerabilities. 
12. Stand up for yourself and don't let anyone push you around or control you. 
13. Don't be afraid to confront a manipulator head-on and make them understand that their behavior is unacceptable. 
14. Maintain healthy relationships with people who respect and appreciate you for who you are. 
15. Avoid negative people who are only going to bring down your mood or try to manipulate you into doing something you don't want to do. 
16. Educate yourself about manipulation and the techniques manipulators use so that you can better protect yourself from them in the future. 
17. Pray for guidance and wisdom in order to discern truth from lies. 
18. Have a circle of supportive friends/family that you can rely on when times get tough. 
19. Keep your mind occupied with things that make you happy and bring positive energy into your life. 
20. Surround yourself with things that inspire you and make you feel good – art, nature, music, and more.
21. Stay away from drama as much as possible – it will only eat away at your peace of mind and leave you feeling drained.
22. Live each day as if it were your last – enjoy the moment without worrying about what tomorrow may bring.
23. Forgive those who have hurt you in the past – holding onto anger only hurts you more in the end .
24. Embrace change – sometimes new beginnings come in the strangest packages.
25. Live with openness and love – these are two of the most powerful weapons against manipulation.

With these tips you are now well-equipped to pay attention the next time you communicate with a loved one, friend or worker.  We all have to live on this planet together, so we might as well make our time on it worth our while--let go of manipulators!
